THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROPOSED SOLUTION :
  • Providing the planning tool based on parameters like no. of employees, their destination, capacity of vehicles, pick up locations, shift time etc.
  • Provide managers in charge of route planning, a thoroughly user-friendly, visual map of the city and surroundings, with all details relating to roads, inter-distances, etc.  This will be an intelligent digitized map which can be zoomed to any extent, and in which any amount of detail can be included, both visual and in the form of “attribute data” seen by clicking on an “info” icon and then on the “object” in the map.
  • Once the pick-up and drop points in various localities of the city are decided, the managers will be able, using very user-friendly tools, to visualize the points on the digitized map.
  • An additional module can also be provided for deciding or suggesting pick-up and delivery points automatically, based on a constraint, say the maximum walking distance from corporate office to pick-up point, and aiming at optimizing the distance.  For this, it will be necessary for the manager to be able to mark the corporate office with reasonable accuracy on the digitized map.
  • Attached to each marked pick-up point will be detailed information (“attribute data”) of the pick up vehicle, employees boarding from the respective pick up points.  This information gets attached through a simple process of data entry, or linking with ERP system.
  • The proposed solution will process the above data to suggest optimal routing combinations:
    • From the point of view of time from first pick-up point to destination, so  that traveling time is minimized
    • From the point of view of distance traveled, in case payment to  transport provider on per km basis
    • Acceptable trade-offs between the above two considerations
    • optimally balancing number of routes and number of vehicles  with           traveling time, so that in case vehicles are hired on fixed daily rate basis, with upper limits on the kilometers run and time retained by company   (for example, Vehicles may be hired on fixed payment basis within 50 kms and 10 hours per day), the number of routes/vehicles can perhaps be reduced without unacceptable increase in running time from first  pick-up point to destination.
    • Determining the optimal size (carrying capacity) of vehicles

  • While determining the optimal routes, fixed constraints, temporary constraints and specific manager-imposed constraints can be built-in.
  • The proposed solution will suggest certain optimal number of routes, which will be depicted on the digitized map.  The manager can partly or fully confirm the suggested routes, and then the final combination of routes as decided by the manager will be displayed.
  • The system will permit the exercise of re-planning of the routes to be done at any time as desired by the manager.  The manager may however choose to do this according to his judgment based on the number of changes or additions that have taken place since the last re-planning exercise.  Based on chosen considerations, the solution can also prompt the manager that a re-planning exercise is due.
  • Once the suggested routes have been accepted (partially or fully as the case may be), automatic mails will be sent to all those who are affected by the decision. 
  • Route maps can be printed and supplied to the drivers.
  • Real time vehicle tracking helps to the exact location of vehicle and employees can know the expected arrival of their pick up vehicle through SMS query or logging into the internet or even by calling the operations dept.
